Position Overview
As the Family Empowerment Coordinator, you’ll design, implement, and continuously improve engaging, evidence-based programming for adults and teens residing in the family residential shelter, as well as families in our housing program who have exited shelter. You will empower participants with practical life skills, financial literacy, housing readiness, and self-advocacy—tailored through age-specific tracks and trauma-informed curricula. Your work will help families navigate barriers, secure permanent housing, and build durable, independent living skills.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Program Development & Implementation
- Design and deliver age-appropriate personal development curricula for adults and teenagers, covering personal care, financial literacy, household management, communication, employment readiness, and community navigation.
- Create trauma-informed, culturally responsive curricula that acknowledge and address the stressors of homelessness.
- Develop individualized personal development plans based on participant assessments and goals.
- Build distinct programming tracks for adults and teens, aligned with developmental needs and housing readiness.
- Plan and coordinate practical workshops (budgeting, job search strategies, apartment hunting, tenancy maintenance) and experiential learning experiences.
- Continuously assess and refine programming to maximize engagement and outcomes.
Direct Service & Instruction
- Facilitate weekly life skills classes for adult residents and housing program participants (financial literacy, housing applications, employment readiness, resource navigation).
- Lead teen-focused sessions on academic support, career exploration, healthy relationships, and future planning.
- Deliver group sessions across shelter, housing locations, and community settings; provide ongoing follow-up for families transitioning to permanent housing.
- Monitor participant progress, adjust programs as needed, and maintain a strengths-based, empowerment-focused approach.
Assessment & Case Coordination with Case Managers
- Conduct comprehensive life skills assessments for new participants and shelter residents.
- Assess family needs to inform life skills planning; align programming with housing and service plans.
- Collaborate with case managers to ensure coordinated, client-centered strategies.
- Maintain thorough records of attendance, progress, and outcomes; prepare regular reports for leadership and funders.
- Document program impact and identify opportunities for improvement.
Community Partnerships & Resources
- Build and nurture relationships with local employers, training programs, GED providers, mental health services, and other community resources.
- Connect residents to job training, educational opportunities, and supportive services.
- Coordinate guest speakers, field trips, and community-based learning experiences.
- Advocate for participants within various systems and maintain a robust resource library for residents.
- Work closely with shelter staff, social workers, and other supports to maximize outcomes.
Education and Experience
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Education, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience working with homeless populations, vulnerable populations, or in residential settings, preferred
- Experience developing and facilitating educational programming for adults and/or youth.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles and practices.
- Understanding of barriers faced by homeless families, including housing discrimination, employment challenges, and system navigation.
- Strong group facilitation, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work with diverse populations, including individuals with disabilities or mental health challenges.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic database management.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Preferred
- Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Experience specifically with family homelessness or emergency shelter programs.
- Background in adult education or youth development.
- Certifications in life skills instruction, financial counseling, or job readiness training.
- Experience with community-based programming and resource development.
